Sunday’s opening events for the upcoming exhibition “Heaven and Earth: Art of Byzantium from Greek Collections” at the National Gallery in Washington DC are probably going to not happen. They are among the losses resulting from the US government shutdown. Two Greek officials and many Greek scholars were in Washington for the formal opening of the show on Wednesday which didn’t happen.

If the art in the show engages the entire metaphysical and ontological spectrum from heaven to earth, but it can’t be seen in Washington, does this mean Washington is hell?
